Top 10 Health Hints for Santa

Children around the world send Santa Claus their wish lists this time of year. He's mighty busy during December, and we hear he has no plans to retire any time soon! So we're sending Santa our own list: ten healthy ageing tips, personalized for Old Saint Nick himself.

Santa with cookies and milk

  1. Cut back on the cookies and milk. A few sweet treats won't hurt, but don't overdo it. Switch to low-fat milk. And how about trading some of those cookies for Rudolph's carrots?

  2. Add more exercise to your daily routine. Sure, you get plenty of activity on Christmas Eve, but you need a year-round fitness plan to benefit your heart, brain and all-around wellness.

  3. Beware of falls! Falls are a leading cause of disability for seniors, so take extra care climbing down those chimneys. And be sure to wear your seatbelt while dashing through the snow in your sleigh.

  4. Keep your immunizations up-to-date. Seniors are at higher risk of serious complications from flu and other preventable diseases. And don't forget, Santa—as a world traveler, you should check with your healthcare provider to find out about the recommended vaccines.

  5. Take a refresher driving course. The skies are busier than when you first started piloting that sleigh, and it's a great idea to keep your skills up to date. And don't forget to have regular eye exams.

  6. Avoid hypothermia. As we grow older, our bodies are more sensitive to temperature extremes. You might want to add thermal underwear under your red suit. But dressing in layers may be the best choice so you can avoid becoming overheated while visiting children in Hawaii.

  7. Quit smoking! We see you less with your signature pipe these days, and that's great! Smoking raises your risk of cancer, heart disease, even dementia.

  8. Give Santa's Workshop a safety inspection. Be sure electrical and plumbing systems are in good working order, install smoke alarms, and caution the elves to keep clutter out of pathways to reduce the risk of falls.

  9. Avoid holiday stress. We know—who has a greater challenge with this one? Keep the "ho ho ho" in your holidays by pacing yourself and getting tasks done in advance. And don't try to do it all yourself! Ask the elves and mall Santas to pitch in if you're feeling overwhelmed.

  10. Learn about the North Pole senior services system. Take advantage of benefits that can help you and Mrs. Claus remain as healthy and active as possible during your senior years!
